On September 13, 2024, the China Automobile Standards Internationalization Center (CASIC) was invited by the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the World Trade Organization (WTO) to attend the 2024 WTO Public Forum session titled “Automotive Industry: Climate, Technology, and Geopolitical Challenges.”
The session was co-organized by the Jacques Delors Institute (IJD) and the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA). Experts from BMW Group and the World Trade Organization (WTO) were invited to deliver keynote speeches. The forum focused on structural changes within the automotive industry and the combined impact of technological, environmental, and geopolitical factors. One of the main topics discussed was the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), with particular attention given to the rapid development of China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) industry.
WTO experts analyzed the profound impact of electrification on international supply chains, presenting market share data of different types of new energy vehicles across major markets. PSIA experts shared insights on the global production network of electric vehicle manufacturers, while IJD provided an overview of market shares for various brands in both electric vehicles and battery production. BMW highlighted the transition of the European automotive industry towards low-carbon and green development.
In addition, attendees engaged in discussions on topics such as fragmentation of the automotive supply chain, the role of developing countries in the industry's transformation, second-hand car trade, and new investment trends in Europe.
