The 2023 World Automobile Standards and Innovation Conference(WASIC) held in Shenzhen China

On November 26-28, 2023, the World Automobile Standards and Innovation Conference(WASIC) was successfully held in Pingshan District, Shenzhen. The event was hosted by China Automotive Technology and Research Center Co., Ltd. (CATARC), Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, People's Government of Pingshan District, and organized by China Automotive Standardization Research Institute (CASRI). 

 

The event was themed of Standards Leading the High-quality Development of the Automotive Industry. An Tiecheng, President of CATARC, Lu Mei, General manager of CATARC, leaders of the State Administration for Market Regulation(SAMR) and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology(MIIT) and other leaders attended the meeting. Guests from the United Nations , the International Organization for Standardization and nearly 20 overseas countries and regions governments, enterprises, universities, research institutes and media attended the conference.

At the plenary meeting, CATARC leader signed strategic cooperation agreements separately with Uzbek Agency for Technical regulation, American National Standards Institute(ANSI) and Standards Press of China on internationalization and digital development of standards, and exchange and cooperation of standards. Leaders of SAMR, MIIT and CATARC witnessed the signing ceremony.


Francois E. Guichard, Official of UNECE and Secretary of the GRVA of WP.29, Alexandar Kupfur, Chair of IEC SyC SET, Valérie Maupin, Director of BNA and Committee Manager of ISO/TC 22, Lian Yubo, Chief scientist of BYD Group and President of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute of BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd., Lai Xinli, General Manager of Science and Technology and Project Management Department of Chongqing Changan Automobile Co., Ltd. and other guests delivered keynote speeches on the development of domestic and foreign standards.

 

During the WASIC, the International Dialogue on Sustainable Development and Strategic Policy Dialogue were also held. Five thematic conferences on Vulnerable Road Users (VRU) Protection, Compliance of Automobile Cybersecurity and Data Security Standards, Intelligent Connected Vehicle Standards Navigation and Standard Roadmap, Automobile Low-carbon, Power Battery Safety and The Sixth Meeting of the Foreign Experts Advisory Group(FEAG) were also held.

Among the meetings above, the International Dialogue on Sustainable Development was themed of Standards and Regulations: Accelerators to Realization of UN SDGs in Automotive Industry. Mr. Benjamin Rea, Senior Economist of Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China hosted the keynote speech session, and Ms. Yu Xinli, president of China Standardization for Association hosted roundtable discussion session. Mr. Wu Zhixin, deputy general manager of CATARC, attended the Dialogue and delivered a speech. Nearly 300 guests from domestic and foreign government departments, technical institutions, international organizations and industrial enterprise attended the meeting.

 

Representatives from Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, WHO, UNECE, ISO, CEN/CENELEC, ANSI, and Uganda National Bureau of Standards, shared their global experience and models of UN SDGs in the perspective of automobile standardization.

The Program of UN SDGs and Automotive Standardization Actions & the White paper on Exploration and Practice of Chinese Automotive Industry for Implementing the UN SDGs are initiated during the Dialogue. These two programs are striving for summarizing the industry's excellent practice in implementing the UN SDGs and providing new ideas and solutions for the greener and more circular environment of the global automobile industry development.

 

The roundtable discussions addressed the topics of "Important Contribution of International Standardization to Sustainable Development" and "International Cooperation to Promote Sustainable Development" under the thematic framework of "A New Beginning and New Journey Towards a Common Vision", and reached a consensus towards sustainable development of automotive industry: Ⅰ international standardization of automotive industry is a key factor in promoting high-quality development, and will play a leading role in promoting global sustainable development. Ⅱ, promoting collaboration of developing international standards and regulations in green & low-carbon, automated driving, safety and other fields, as well as strengthening communication and cooperation, so as to gradually improve the formulation of standards and regulations system in the automotive sector under the condition of sustainable development. Ⅲ, building a partnership of connectivity, green development, innovation & cooperation, which aims to contribute to sustainable development of global economy, society and environment.

During the WASIC, An Tiecheng, President of CATARC, made exchange with representatives of the UN Resident Coordinator Office, UNECE, WHO, ISO, IEC, French Direction General of Energy and Climate, and ACEA. Mr. Wu Zhixin, Deputy General Manager of CATARC, attended the event, and Lian Yubo, Chief scientist of BYD Group and President of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute of BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd., participated in the exchange activities on behalf of the Chinese automotive industry.

 

An Tiecheng extended a warm welcome to the representatives of international and regional organizations and foreign governments, and introduced the core business and international development of CATARC. He said that CATARC has been actively participating in the harmonization of international automotive standards and regulations for a long time, giving full play to multilateral and bilateral dialogue and cooperation mechanisms to jointly promote the interconnection of automotive standards and regulations with all parties. He pointed out that the WASIC is committed to building an open and innovative exchange and cooperation platform, leading the transformation and upgrading of the global automotive industry with automotive standards and regulations, and jointly promoting the sustainable development of the global economy, environment and society.

Wu Zhixin thanked all the delegates for their support and contributions to the conference, and hoped that all parties will continue to adhere to unity and mutual trust, win-win cooperation, and promote a higher level of automotive standards and the international development of the industry.

 

Standards enable technological innovation and service industrial development. In the future, CATARC will adhere to the guidance of standards, strengthen overall planning, aim at the forefront of technology, focus on industrial development, and strive to become the most recognized industrial think tank by the government, the most respected partner of the industry, and the most trusted authority by the public to support the sustainable and high-quality development of the automobile industry.
